AFAR will continue their intensive study of the Maya site of Cahal Pech for the 16th season. Our investigations will focus on the western ball court area of the site and the transition space between it and the palace complex that lies to the east.
AFAR will return to the shores of beautiful Tróia to continue exploring this magnificent Roman site. This summer we will search for riverside infrastructures, warehouses, harbors, wharfs, quays to understand how the supply and export management of the site operated. We will also survey the occupation of the shoreline of Tróia.

AFAR will return to Zorita de los Canes for our eighth field season in 2023. We will continue our investigations of Area IV as well as explore a number of points of interest discovered during a recent ground penetrating radar survey.
Maya at the Playa (M@P) Web Edition is a four-day "Everything Maya" event that's comprised of lectures and a hieroglyphic workshop.
Maya at the Playa is an inclusive conference that brings together members of the public, lifelong learners, pre-collegiate students, and academics to listen and interact with established and young scholars of all things Maya.
This year’s event will take place on the Web, in the format of Zoom Webinar provided by Davidson College. Zoom links will be posted here. We kept a format close to the original one, so that longtime attendees will feel at home (literally) while watching our lectures or participating in our workshop. Yet, we are opening the 1000 “seats” to anyone in an effort to make our Web Conference accessible to students, enthusiasts, and scholars around the world. This year will also feature a presentation in Spanish for the first time.
The AFAR team will return to the Belize River Valley for the 14th consecutive season. Our team will continue investigating the western ball court of Cahal Pech and explore the transitional areas between the elite residence and ball court.
For the fourth consecutive season, our team will investigate Mieza, which exists today as a collection of disparate monuments strewn across the landscape. This project aims to fully connect the monuments across the site including areas currently inaccessible to the public. The intent is to understand the site from a more complete historical context and allow for its protection. The research plan for 2020 includes further investigation of a complex of structures north of the bath complex discovered in 2019.

For the third consecutive season, our students will join the expert-lead team to investigate the Roman fish-salting capital of Tróia. Work will continue in Workshop IV and conservation efforts will begin at the pristine basilica.
