About the Conference
AFAR Announces the thirteenth annual Maya at the Playa Conference, to take place from September 26-29 in Palm Coast, FL.
The Maya at the Playa Conference (M@P) is a four-day "Everything Maya" event that's comprised of lectures, workshops, and fun social events.
Maya at the Playa is an inclusive conference that brings together members of the public, lifelong learners, pre-collegiate students, and academics to listen and interact with established and young scholars of all things Maya. The event takes place in Palm Coast, FL, a short drive away from the Daytona Beach airport. The conference includes hands-on workshops on hieroglyphic writing (both introductory and advanced), along with interactive lectures and fun social gatherings.
The 13th annual M@P (Sept. 26-29, 2019) will focus on comparative approaches, with talks by 16 scholars – from Guatemala, Belize, Finland, Canada, and the USA – to explore how perspectives from beyond the broader Yucatán can help us answer questions about the ancient Maya. M@P presenters will explore refreshing comparative approaches to ancient Maya writing system, religion, economies, government, architecture, urbanism, and collapse from the perspective of ancient Angkor, Greece, Southeastern USA; of Medieval Europe and Southeast Asia; and even of modern American cities. This year’s conference promises to be exceptional in its breadth of topics and, as usual, will bring an amazing group of familiar and new faces to the Playa.
Maya at the Playa not only gives participants the chance to learn from the best in the field, but also provides an opportunity for scholars and non-professionals to socialize outside the traditional confines of the classroom. In addition to great academic content, participants can share experiences like the Lifetime Achievement Dinner or one-on-one glyph instruction with the experts. These are mutually rewarding experiences for both presenters and attendees.
The conference will be held at the Palm Coast Hilton Garden Inn and hosted by American Foreign Academic Research, which is a 501c3 non-profit that provides education and outreach programs for pre-collegiate students and the public for over fourteen years.
Go ahead and treat yourself to a long weekend of learning and fun with others who share a passion for the Maya culture and discovery. Seating is limited so register online or call today to secure your spot.
